Humanoid Robot Autonomy Levels

Distinguish remote control, scripted execution and supervised autonomy for a defined humanoid task, with explicit limits on the standards cited.

Introduction

Humanoid autonomy is often described with one word even when the control methods are very different. A robot may walk autonomously while a human selects every grasp. Another may plan a full task but ask for help after one failure. Useful reporting should describe who chooses the goal who plans the motion who handles exceptions and how much human support is needed.

Separate teleoperation from autonomy

Direct remote control can demonstrate hardware capability but it is not autonomous task execution. Assisted teleoperation may add balance collision avoidance or grasp stabilization. Reporting should state which actions come from the human and which are generated onboard.

Scripted behavior is another category

A fixed sequence can run without a human and still have very little adaptation. It may work only when object location and workstation geometry are tightly controlled. Call this repeatable automation when appropriate rather than implying the robot can understand new situations.

Supervised autonomy needs intervention metrics

A robot can plan and execute tasks while a human handles exceptions. Measure interventions per hour or per task and record why help was needed.

Report autonomy as an evidence profile

For each task state goal source planning source motion source perception dependence allowed environment human intervention rate and recovery capability. This profile avoids forcing very different robots into one oversimplified number and makes marketing claims easier to compare.

Limitations and missing information

  • The cited public records do not establish a numbered humanoid autonomy scale or certify any robot's level.

Sources and methodology

ISO 8373:2021 is a robotics vocabulary standard. The cited Chinese decision/planning and operation-test documents are projects 20261652-T-604 and 20261650-T-604, not published autonomy rankings. The reporting categories here are editorial distinctions, not standard levels.
