Cylindrical Robots

A cylindrical robot layout combines rotation around a vertical axis with linear radial and vertical travel. Those motions define a workspace around the column.

How these robots work

The rotating base selects an angle while the linear axes set radius and height. Tool orientation requires the axes supplied by that configuration.

How to compare the task

Compare the required points with the reachable cylindrical envelope. A point close to the central column may be inaccessible even when the outer reach is adequate.

Examples and applications

  • Column-based transfer
  • Radial material handling
  • Machine access layouts

Limits of this category

  • The central column occupies part of the work area.
  • The basic layout does not provide every wrist orientation.

What to check for the intended task

  • Check minimum and maximum radial travel
  • Measure access around fixtures
  • Test tool clearance through the full rotation
