Service, domestic, and social robotics
Telepresence Robots
Telepresence robots carry a camera, microphone and screen so a remote person can move through a location. The remote user supplies the conversation and destination choice.
How these robots work
A video connection carries sound and images while movement commands steer the base. Some systems add local obstacle handling to the remote control.
How to compare the task
Separate call quality from driving performance. A good video call cannot show whether the base can reach a desk or pass a doorway.
Examples and applications
- Remote office visits
- Classroom participation
- Facility walkthroughs
Limits of this category
- Weak connectivity can interrupt conversation and movement.
- A screen on a mobile base is not a general-purpose assistant.
What to check for the intended task
- Measure command delay and video delay separately
- Test thresholds and tight turns
- Check the response to a dropped call
